The benefits of buying locally grown flowers.

Using seasonal and locally grown flowers has been part of my business since I started. There are new flower growers popping up all the time at the moment which is fantastic and I was reminded of their importance a couple of weeks ago. Lisa, who owns Homestead Flowers one of the local growers I regularly source my flowers from won an award for ‘best garden for wildlife’ from Guildford in Bloom.

Lisa and lots of other independent flower farmers grow their flowers organically and without pesticides. There are so many benefits to this but essentially by not killing off the bugs and slugs you are supporting the entire food chain ~ bees (pollinators) insects, frogs, caterpillars (butterfly’s!) birds - they all need each other to survive and a beautiful wild garden to live in.

By choosing a wedding florist that buys locally grown flowers you are supporting your local community, reducing the environmental impact of cut flowers, and helping to protect these tiny little green spaces for wildlife.

There’s no plastic wrap, no air miles, no road miles in refrigerated lorries, and no huge greenhouses.

Now, for full clarity, I can’t say I buy all of my flowers like this. I would like to, but I still very much rely on imported flowers, especially Roses. There are so many reasons for this (a whole other post!) but what I would say is, if this is important to you and your wedding then talk to your Florist about where they buy their flowers from and choose a seasonal colour palette - white and purple in Spring, peach and orange in the Autumn.
